About Luna

Luna Spiegel

From Lüneburg's Bläserklasse to a guest spot with the NDR Bigband — Luna Spiegel is a trombonist whose career is still being written, one festival at a time.

Biography

Luna Spiegel picked up the trombone in Lüneburg, where she grew up and still returns to play — she's been part of the city's Stadtfest lineup every year since 2018, the same year she joined the Bläserklasse (wind class) at the Gymnasium Wilhelm-Raabe-Schule. What might have stayed a school-band instrument became a serious pursuit fast — within a couple of years of joining the Bläserklasse, she was working the regional competition circuit, playing festival stages beyond Lüneburg and taking part in workshops and jazz festivals all over Germany.

The current chapter runs through Hamburg's Hochschule für Musik und Theater (HfMT). Luna completed a Jungstudium in Jazz Trombone there in 2024–25, moved into the school's Inklusion @HfMT (Art plus) certificate program for 2025–26, and is now studying for a full Bachelor of Music in Jazz Trombone at HfMT — supported throughout by her current trombone teachers, Prof. Dan Gottshall and Prof. Joachim Preu, and, in earlier years, by Steffen Happel, Mathis Wroblewski, and Ken Drombrowski.

Alongside her studies, Luna has held trombone chairs in youth jazz orchestras across five German states — Hamburg, Niedersachsen, Schleswig-Holstein, and as a substitute in NRW, with an earlier chair in Hessen — and at the 2024 Landeswettbewerb Jugend Jazzt Hamburg won a guest-soloist appearance with the NDR Bigband, followed by a two-week internship with the band in April 2025. In April 2026 she toured Shanghai with the Landesjugendjazzorchester Hamburg for the Shanghai Spring International Music Festival, one stop in a run of international projects that has also taken her to Paris and, on a two-week exchange with her music school, to Cáceres in Spain.

None of that has come at the expense of range: she still plays trumpet, drums, and piano, plays in the pop-rock band Rockytrio alongside her jazz work, and picks up chairs across Hamburg's big-band scene as a regular substitute. From Bläserklasse to a guest spot with the NDR Bigband, she reads less like someone arriving at a career and more like someone already several stops into one — with the Bachelor's degree, the biggest step, still ahead of her.

Beyond the trombone

More than the trombone

Off stage, Luna is first a listener — the kind of concertgoer who shows up for other people's sets, not just her own, alongside photography and reading. She also loves to travel and get to know new cultures — by train whenever she can, because she simply loves travelling by train.

2024–2026

Music-school advisory seat

From 2024 to 2026, Luna held a seat on the Musikschulbeirat — the music-school advisory board of the Musikschule der Hansestadt Lüneburg. A small but real role: not just being taught in her hometown, but helping decide how that teaching happens.

Off stage

A committed concertgoer

As often as she's on a stage, Luna is in the audience for someone else's — the habit of a musician who treats other people's sets as part of the job, not just her own performances.
